Political Map of South America

🎯 First, Let’s Get the Basics:
South America has 12 independent countries + 1 overseas territory (French Guiana).
We’ll group them into four clusters for remembering it easily:
- Northern Arc (touching the Caribbean Sea)
- Andean Spine (running along the Andes)
- Interior/Heartland Countries
- Southern Cone
- The Core: BRAZIL
Let’s understand them one by one, I will suggest you to sync them with the political map provided above.
1. Northern Arc – “Touching the Caribbean”
👉 These countries are in the north and face the Caribbean Sea. Think of this as the northern crown of South America.
Country | Capital | Key Memory Tip |
Colombia | Bogotá | Famous for coffee ☕ and Andes begin here. |
Venezuela | Caracas | Petroleum-rich, near Lake Maracaibo. |
Guyana | Georgetown | English-speaking (former British colony). |
Suriname | Paramaribo | Dutch-speaking (rare in the world). |
French Guiana | Cayenne | Not independent, French overseas territory 🇫🇷. |
🧠 Memory Trick:
Imagine five siblings lined up from west to east—Colombia → Venezuela → Guyana → Suriname → French Guiana.
Call them “CVGSF” → “Can Very Good Students Focus?” —a motivational trick! 😊
2. Andean Spine – “Mountains + West Coast”
This is the most iconic group—the Andes mountains pass through all these.
They also face the Pacific Ocean.
Country | Capital | Unique Feature |
Ecuador | Quito | High elevation capital, near equator. |
Peru | Lima | Inca heritage, cold Peru Current. |
Bolivia | La Paz (administrative), Sucre (constitutional) | Landlocked but mountainous. |
Chile | Santiago | Long, narrow country; like Kerala in shape! |
🧠 Memory Trick:
Call them “EPBC” → “Every Peak Brings Cold”
(Ecuador → Peru → Bolivia → Chile), helps you remember both order & Andes association.
3. Interior/Heartland Countries – “Landlocked Twins”
Only two landlocked countries in South America:
Country | Capital | Memory Cue |
Paraguay | Asunción | Sits in heart of continent. |
Bolivia | La Paz/Sucre | (already discussed above) |
🧠 Think of Paraguay & Bolivia as introverts 😀—landlocked and inward.
Also remember:
👉 Only 2 countries do NOT share border with Brazil: Chile & Ecuador.
4. Southern Cone – “Tapering End”
These are the southernmost countries, shaped like a cone.
Country | Capital | Special Fact |
Argentina | Buenos Aires | Messi’s home 🙂 ! Pampas grasslands. |
Uruguay | Montevideo | Small, east of Argentina. |
Paraguay | Asunción | Sandwiched between Brazil, Bolivia & Argentina. |
🧠 Trick:
“AUP” → “Argentina-Uruguay-Paraguay” (moving west to east and back inward).
Note:
- Uruguay and Paraguay do not share a boundary with each other, although many think they do.
- Argentina lies between them.
So, have we covered all the countries? No, we are still left with one! Ah! 😄 You’re absolutely right to catch that — Brazil, the giant of South America, deserves a full royal entry, not just a passing mention.
Let’s give Brazil the spotlight it deserves in our Political Map Teaching Session. 💡
5. BRAZIL – The Colossus of the Continent
📌 Basic Facts:
- Capital: Brasília
- (⚠️ Not Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo – common mistake in prelims!)
- Language: Portuguese (Only country in South America to speak Portuguese)
- Borders: Shares boundaries with 10 out of 12 countries!
✅ Doesn’t share border with:
- Chile
- Ecuador
🧠 Memory Hack: Think of Brazil as the giant octopus in the center, whose tentacles touch almost every country.
🌍 Why Brazil is Important Politically:
Feature | Fact |
Area | 5th largest country in the world |
Amazon Rainforest | Covers 60% of Brazil – ecological hotspot |
River | Amazon River – 2nd longest in the world, largest in volume |
Neighbours | 10 neighbours – highest in SA |
Geographic Spread | Covers both Equator and Tropic of Capricorn – only South American country to do so |
🔁 Quick Revision Table:
