Indian Sites in the Tentative List of UNESCO
The Tentative List is an important preliminary stage in the process of inscription of sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Every member country of UNESCO prepares and maintains a Tentative List of properties that it intends to nominate for World Heritage status in the future. Only those sites that have been included in a country’s Tentative List can subsequently be nominated for formal evaluation and inscription on the World Heritage List. Thus, the Tentative List serves as an indicative inventory of cultural and natural heritage sites that possess potential Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) and may qualify for global recognition.
India maintains a large and diverse Tentative List that reflects the country’s vast cultural traditions, architectural heritage, archaeological sites, historic cities, and unique natural landscapes. The sites included range from ancient religious centres and temple complexes to historic forts, cultural landscapes, traditional settlements, biodiversity hotspots, and prehistoric archaeological remains. These nominations collectively illustrate the richness and diversity of India’s heritage and its long historical continuity.
The following table presents a consolidated summary of the Indian sites currently included in UNESCO’s Tentative List, along with their location, year of inclusion, and key significance. These sites are important not only from the perspective of heritage conservation but also may frequently appear in current affairs and UPSC examinations, as they represent potential future additions to India’s list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
