Music and Its Association with Time
In Indian tradition, music is not merely sound. It is aligned with cosmic rhythm (Rta).
- Indian music assigns → specific seasons (Ritu), specific times of the day to particular Ragas. This system is called the Samay Siddhanta (Theory of Time).
- The belief is simple yet profound:
A raga reaches its highest aesthetic beauty only when performed at its prescribed time. - This reflects a deep civilizational idea — Music must be in harmony with nature.
Raga and Seasons (Ritu)
Indian tradition associates certain ragas with six Indian seasons.
Let us see them conceptually.
🌨️ Shishir (Winter) – Raga Malkauns
- Deep | Meditative | Serious | Majestic
Malkauns evokes stillness and introspection — appropriate for the cold, silent winter nights.
🌸 Vasant (Spring) – Raga Hindol
- Joyful | Romantic | Celebratory
Spring symbolizes renewal, and Hindol captures blossoming life.
☀️ Grishma (Summer) – Raga Deepak
Traditionally believed to evoke heat and fire.
Legend says → Tansen could light lamps by singing Deepak.
It represents intensity.
🌧️ Varsha (Monsoon) – Raga Megh
- Associated with rain | Emotionally charged | Evokes longing and relief
In legend, Megh Malhar could bring rain.
🍁 Sharad (Autumn) – Raga Bhairav
- Serious | Devotional | Philosophical
Sharad is clear and calm — Bhairav mirrors this clarity.
🌾 Hemant (Pre-Winter) – Raga Shree
- Dignified | Majestic | Slightly solemn
Represents transition into cold season.
Raga and Time of Day
Indian classical music divides the day into segments. Let us understand major ragas according to performance time.

Examples:
- Bhairav | Ahir Bhairav | Basant | Todi | Bhoopali Todi | Bhatiyar | Bilawal | Bilaskhani Todi | Hindol
These ragas awaken the mind gently.
🌞 Afternoon Ragas
Afternoon ragas are lighter and more relaxed.
Examples:
- Vrindavani Sarang | Shuddh Sarang | Poorvi
They reflect mid-day openness and balance.
🌇 Evening Ragas
Evening ragas often express → Romanticism, Devotion, Serenity
Examples:
- Bhoopali | Hansdhwani | Khamaj | Shyam Kalyan | Yaman | Shree
Among these, Yaman is one of the most performed evening ragas.
🌙 Night Ragas
Night ragas are → Deep, Introspective, Majestic, Emotionally intense
Examples:
- Malhar | Nand | Malkauns | Kirwani | Chandni Kedar | Darbari | Durga
Raga Darbari, for example, evokes royal depth and gravity.
Exception
- Bhairavi → Can be performed at any time.
It is often sung at the conclusion of concerts.
Philosophical Understanding
Why this association?
Indian aesthetics believes:
- Each time of day has a specific emotional vibration.
- Each raga has a specific tonal personality.
- When both align, aesthetic rasa intensifies.
Thus, music becomes not just art, but cosmic participation. This is why traditional classical musicians strictly follow time theory.
